Ray Wilkins: 'Michael Carrick is integral to England'

Wilkins: 'Carrick is integral to England'

Former Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins believes that Michael Carrick has now established himself as an integral member of the England side.

The Manchester United midfielder's introduction coincided with an improved display from the Three Lions as they held Italy to a 1-1 draw in Turin on Tuesday.

Phil Jones was initially selected in a defensive midfield role, but the Manchester United defender struggled before he was replaced by his club teammate for the second half.

Wilkins told talkSPORT: "I think Michael has become an essential and integral part of our side. From the professional eye, he is superb. He gives a serenity to the whole side and England looked a whole lot better with him sitting in there.

"He seems to be coming to the fore and is his own being. I'm delighted for him. I think you've only got to see it from the Manchester United situation – he's looked outstanding."

Three Lions skipper Wayne Rooney also hailed Carrick's display against the Azzurri.
