Jamie Redknapp: 'Wayne Rooney's England career hasn't matched early expectations'

Jamie Redknapp feels that Wayne Rooney's poor displays at major tournaments have prevented his England career from matching the early expectations of his ability.

Jamie Redknapp believes that Wayne Rooney's England career has not lived up to expectations due to his poor displays at major tournaments.

The 29-year-old will reach 100 caps for the Three Lions in their Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia at Wembley, becoming just the ninth England player to reach the milestone.

However, after bursting onto the scene at Euro 2004, former Liverpool and England star Redknapp feels that Rooney has not managed to reach the heights many had predicted following the tournament in Portugal.

Redknapp told the Daily Mail: "It is very difficult to criticise someone who has reached 100 caps. But we did expect more from him back then. He's our most talented player in a long time but he hasn't scored enough goals in major tournaments.

"He has just one goal in a World Cup. But he's had an incredible career and is not the first great player to be better for their club than their country. He will probably admit it hasn't always gone the way he'd have liked."

Rooney has scored 43 goals in his 99 appearances for England.
