England vs. San Marino: Previous meetings

Sports Mole looks back on the four previous encounters between England and minnows San Marino.

Tomorrow evening, the onus will be on England to fire in a few goals at Wembley, where San Marino will be the visitors in a European Championship qualifier.

The two sides have met on four previous occasions, with the aggregate score currently 26-1 in England's favour.

Here, Sports Mole has taken a closer look at those quartet of matches.

England 6-0 San Marino, February 1993

From his 62 senior international caps, David Platt scored a highly respectable 27 goals. Four of those came in this World Cup qualifying encounter against San Marino, while he also saw a penalty saved. There was also first England goals for Carlton Palmer and Les Ferdinand, the latter of whom was making his debut.

San Marino 1-7 England, November 1993

England may have scored seven goals, but it was an embarrassing night for Graham Taylor's men. Not only did Holland's win in Poland ensure that England would not qualify for the 1994 World Cup, the Three Lions conceded the fastest ever goal in the competition's history in just 8.3 seconds. Stuart Pearce was at fault as Davide Gualtieri stole in to score from his underhit back pass.

England's response, which included four-goal and two-goal hauls from Ian Wright and Paul Ince respectively, as well as a strike from Ferdinand, was positive, but ultimately counted for little. Soon after, Taylor stepped down from his position.

England 5-0 San Marino, October 2012

The visiting Sammarinese put up some unexpected stubborn resistance for 35 minutes until Wayne Rooney broke the deadlock from the penalty spot. He would add another goal during the second half, while his then Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck also bagged himself a brace of goals. The final say went to Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who opened up his goalscoring account at international level with an effort that curled into the top corner of the net.

San Marino 0-8 England, March 2013

When the whistle was blown for the interval at the Stadio Olimpico, England were 5-0 in front thanks to an own goal from Alessandro Della Valle, while Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jermain Defoe, Ashley Young and Frank Lampard also weighed in. After the restart, Defoe doubled his tally, while goals from Rooney and Daniel Sturridge - his first for England - added further gloss to the scoreline.
