Wayne Rooney: 'Overtaking Jimmy Greaves's England record would be great'

Rooney looking forward to "great" record

England captain Wayne Rooney has admitted that it would be "great" to become his country's third-highest scorer of all time, but insisted that his main focus is simply helping the Three Lions win games.

The Manchester United striker is four goals away from surpassing Jimmy Greaves's tally of 44, with Bobby Charlton's all-time record of 49 England goals not too far ahead thereafter.

Rooney told BBC Sport: "I haven't specifically gone out of my way to look at the record but it's there and if I can overtake [Greaves] this week, or in the coming weeks or months, that would be great.

"But I'm not going into the game thinking I've got to beat Jimmy Greaves's record. The most important thing for us is to perform well and win games."

England take on San Marino tonight in a Euro 2016 Group E qualifier at Wembley.
