Phil Jagielka reflects on "fantastic honour" with England

Jagielka honoured to captain England

Phil Jagielka has admitted that it was a "fantastic honour" to captain England as they finished their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with a 3-0 victory over Lithuania.

Wayne Rooney's injury prevented him from wearing the armband in the final Group E games, and it was Jagielka who was given the responsibility in a much-changed lineup on Monday evening.

It was a comfortable finish to the group as Roy Hodgson's side made it 10 wins from 10 games to ensure the skipper was pleased on a memorable evening.

"It was a fantastic honour tonight, and the icing on the cake was the performance," the Everton defender told BBC Radio 5 Live. "Three great goals by three great, promising young talents. Nice too for the fans who had come over, and nice to win as captain.

"No games are easy, especially in international football. We got momentum early in the qualifying campaign and just kept it going and going."

England return to action with friendlies against Spain and France next month.
