Roy Hodgson: 'Players had no complaints about pitch'

Hodgson: 'No complaints about pitch'

Roy Hodgson has insisted that the condition of the Wembley pitch had no ill effects on England's performance in the 3-1 Euro 2016 victory over Slovenia.

Wayne Rooney marked his 100th international cap with the equaliser as the Three Lions came from behind to continue their 100% Group E qualifying record.

A double from Danny Welbeck completed England's comeback on a Wembley surface which had been drenched by rain and savaged by last weekend's NFL game between the Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, Hodgson has stressed that England had no complaints about the pitch come the final whistle.

"We know there's been a problem with the topsoil and the NFL matches have exacerbated the problem but the groundstaff had done a wonderful job in getting it ready," Hodgson told BBC Sport.

"I've played on better Wembley surfaces but it didn't detract from our performance. Certainly, the players weren't complaining about it afterwards."

England will not play at Wembley again until their qualifier against Lithuania on March 27 next year.
