As a nation yet again holds it breath, Sports Mole takes a look at England's hopes for Euro 2012.

The weight of a nation will once again be on the shoulders of the English players as they head into this summer's European Championships.

In some respects they have nothing to lose following the appointment of Roy Hodgson at the start of May.

The former West Bromwich Albion boss has only had two friendlies to get to grips with the squad ahead of the tournament.

However, his team will be expected to hit the ground running when they kick off their campaign against France on Monday, June 11.

Group: D

Manager: Roy Hodgson - The veteran was a surprise choice to many when he was announced as the new manager, but his experience across all levels of the game could make him a very shrewd choice by the FA.

Players to watch:

Joe Hart: On the back of a title-winning season with Manchester City, the goalkeeper is the rock on which England can build their charge for glory.

Steven Gerrard: Almost part of the furniture on the international scene, the captain is always capable of turning a match in his side's favour.

Wayne Rooney: His suspension for the opening two group games could prove damaging to the team, but the talismanic striker is still England's biggest threat going forward.

Previous best: Third place 1968
