Derby County cement top-six place with narrow win over Blackburn Rovers

Jacob Butterfield's early goal is enough for Derby County to beat Blackburn Rovers and move up to fifth in the Championship table.

Derby County have won back-to-back games for the first time in two months thanks to a 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.

The only goal of the game arrived just seven minutes in when Jacob Butterfield fired home his seventh league goal of the season from 20 yards after Blackburn half-cleared a free kick.

Blackburn had the chance to level after half an hour, but Danny Graham shot over the top after rolling his man in the area.

Derby led at the break and it could have been two on the hour mark when Chris Martin's firm strike was beaten out by Jason Steele.

Scott Carson then kept the home side in front with a pair of saves, first denying Graham before keeping out Ben Marshall's pinpoint free kick that was heading for the corner of the net.

Derby struggled to create much in the closing stages but they managed to hang on for three points as Blackburn's late attempts from set pieces missed the target.

The Rams climb a place to fifth in the table, while Blackburn remain 19th.
