Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira "really pleased" with Liverpool draw

Vieira "really pleased" with Liverpool draw

Head coach Patrick Vieira has insisted that he is delighted with Crystal Palace's 1-1 draw with 10-man Liverpool in the Premier League on Monday night.

Palace travelled to Merseyside on a 10-match losing streak against Liverpool, their last victory coming all the way back in April 2017.

However, despite having to withstand relentless pressure, Palace took the lead in the 32nd minute as Wilfried Zaha broke clear to clinically finish past Alisson Becker.

Liverpool were reduced to 10 men soon after the restart when Darwin Nunez headbutted Joachim Andersen, behaviour which will lead to a three-match ban.

To Liverpool's credit, they equalised through a fine Luis Diaz strike, but Palace deservedly held on to earn a share of the spoils.

Although Palace squandered a number of openings to leave Anfield with maximum points, Vieira says that he is "really pleased" to collect a point from last season's runners-up.

As quoted by BBC Sport, the Frenchman said: "I am really pleased. It is not an easy place to come and we defended well as a team. We were prepared to suffer and did. In our counter-attacks we were good. We needed a big team performance and we had it tonight.

"When we won the ball, Wilf ran in behind and the timing of his run was really good. Wilf is a goalscorer. Today he could score more than one.

"When you come to these places you accept you will go through difficult periods. It is about how you manage those and I think we did it will. The first 20 minutes, half an hour was tough but we were really composed, calm and disciplined. That helped us perform well.

"If we don't bring those ingredients, it is really difficult to get something from that game. We competed against them and worked hard. This is the minimum we can do. Then we need the organisation and discipline. We got the point and I am really pleased with that."

Having started the campaign with a 2-0 defeat at home to Arsenal, Palace now sit in 16th position in the Premier League standings.

The Eagles are next in action when they play host to Aston Villa on August 20.
