Ian Holloway: 'English coaching is inferior'

Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway believes that the standard of coaching in England is vastly inferior to other big leagues in Europe.

Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway has said that the standard of coaching in England pales in comparison to other parts of Europe.

The Palace boss believes that while there are plenty of young and talented players in the country, it is the level of teaching that is holding the country back in international football.

"Maybe because we invented the game we think that we can't be taught anything," Holloway told The Mirror.

"I can assure you that the raw talent is there. But our coaching methods have fallen so far behind the rest of the world that it's frightening. I certainly had my eyes opened when I went to look at the coaching methods they employ in Spain.

"Perhaps our island-race mentality means that we aren't prepared to look into our neighbours' gardens and learn in the way that France, Spain, Germany and now Belgium have done over the past 20 years."

Palace were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United on Saturday.
