Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew pleased to keep Dwight Gayle

Alan Pardew says that he was pleased to see striker Dwight Gayle remain with Crystal Palace over the summer.

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew has revealed that he was pleased to see striker Dwight Gayle remain at the club.

The 24-year-old had been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park over the summer, with Bristol City reportedly close to wrapping up his signature.

However, the former Peterborough United frontman remained in South London and has featured five times so far this season.

"I have been impressed with him. Dwight just needs that consistently, but he will score goals," Clubcall.com quotes Pardew as saying. "I didn't want him to leave this summer, it was only him getting frustrated with game time.

"It's good the transfer window is shut, he's playing and got involved. That was important for him, so I'm really pleased.

"He has been fighting for his place, and when gets that he will be in a good position. That's why goals count for strikers, it gives them confidence."

Gayle joined Palace from Peterborough in 2013.
