Two die as crane collapses into Sao Paulo stadium due to host World Cup opener

Two die at Sao Paulo stadium collapse

Two workers have died in Sao Paulo, where a crane collapsed causing significant damage to the stadium due to host the opening match of next year's World Cup.

Corinthians, the club who will use the Itaquerao Stadium as their home ground, this evening named Fabio Luiz Pereira, 42, and Ronaldo Oliveira dos Santos, 44, as the two casualties.

Wednesday's accident could delay the delivery of the arena, which was 94% complete and should be finished by FIFA's December deadline to have all 12 venues ready.

Television images showed that a crane buckled atop the stadium, destroying part of the stands in the East side of the venue.

As the incident occurred around lunchtime, there were said to be fewer workers in the area than at most times.
