Jose Mourinho: 'Chelsea will not spend like kings in January'

Jose Mourinho rules out the prospect of Chelsea spending big to recruit players in the January transfer window.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that he will not use the January transfer window as an opportunity to reinforce his squad.

The Blues, who sit third in the Premier League table, four points adrift of leaders Manchester City, have been linked with a big-money winter move for Monaco hitman Radamel Falcao.

However, the Portuguese insists that he has a long-term vision at Stamford Bridge, where he will allow his current players to develop rather than recruiting expensive competition for the squad.

He told reporters ahead of his team's clash with Southampton today: "We have a plan not for a year, but for a few years.

"We are not desperate to spend and spend, we have players to develop, we have players who are in the last years of their career and we do things step by step.

"We are building a team to be like the Chelsea which was strong in the last decade. If somebody is expecting us to be in the market in January and be kings, for sure Chelsea is not that club. We are doing OK and we keep improving."

Chelsea called time on the calendar year with a narrow 2-1 win over Liverpool at the weekend.
