Former midfielder Jason McAteer suggests that Liverpool should make Chelsea's N'Golo Kante one of their priority targets for the summer window.

Former midfielder Jason McAteer has claimed that Liverpool should try to sign N'Golo Kante from Chelsea.

The Premier League leaders are currently well stocked for options in the centre of the pitch, with Jurgen Klopp having seven experienced options in that position.

However, McAteer, who represented Liverpool between 1995 and 1999, feels that the Merseyside giants should look to partner Fabinho with World Cup winner Kante.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international told The Racing Post: "The role of the holding midfielder has developed in modern times and Liverpool boast one of the best in the business in Fabinho.

"He took time to settle at Anfield but was taken out of the team and given time on the training ground and has now slotted back in seamlessly.

"He just gets it, gives it and doesn't do anything flamboyant, though it took him a while to learn the role, and that's exactly what he's doing. His awareness of danger is fantastic.

"He and N'Golo Kante at Chelsea are the two best players in the Premier League playing that role - Kante is definitely one of the final pieces in Jurgen Klopp's jigsaw."

Kante - a Premier League title winner with both the Blues and Leicester City - has a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2023.
