Ligue 1 stay? Chelsea goalkeeper Petrovic 'targeted' after starring for Strasbourg

Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic is reportedly attracting the interest of a Ligue 1 club after starring on loan at Strasbourg during 2024-25.

Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic will reportedly be given the chance to remain in Ligue 1 this summer.

Despite finishing 2023-24 as the Blues number one, Petrovic was swiftly removed from that position soon after the arrival of Enzo Maresca.

However, the 25-year-old has only enhanced his reputation during a loan stint at Strasbourg, who he helped achieve a seventh-placed finish in the Ligue 1 table.

A total of 10 clean sheets and conceding just 38 goals from 31 matches led to the Serbia international being awarded the club's Player of the Season award.

As it stands, it is unclear whether Petrovic will be provided with another opportunity at Stamford Bridge or whether the Blues will look to cash in after his reputation was elevated.

Which Ligue 1 club want Petrovic?

According to Mohammed Toubache-Ter, who was commenting on X, Monaco are interested in getting a deal over the line once the market reopens in June.

Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro recently acknowledged in an interview with Get Football News France that the club were in the market for a new goalkeeper.

Despite Philipp Kohn and Radoslaw Majecki helping Monaco achieve Champions League qualification, they are seemingly not guaranteed to still be at the club next season.

Petrovic could now be viewed as the ideal alternative if Monaco are able to negotiate a deal with their Chelsea counterparts, who will inevitably want to make a profit on the £14m deal that they agreed with New England Revolution two years ago.

With Petrovic still possessing five years on his contract, Chelsea officials will not feel in a rush to sell unless their valuation is met.

A chance to bolster PSR position?

That said, despite the possibility of Petrovic returning to Stamford Bridge and playing a part next season, co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital know that facilitating a sale could be beneficial in the long term.

Chelsea's mass investment in young talent means that their position with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability regulation is a constant topic for debate.

At the same time as Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen remained backed by Maresca, Chelsea have also been linked with Santos stopper Gabriel Brazao.

Nineteen-year-old Mike Penders is also due to arrive from Genk this summer, the youngster viewed as a potential number one.
