Chelsea’s Michael Essien says he is “on the mend”

Essien on road to recovery

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has revealed that he is "on the mend" after a serious knee injury.

The 28-year-old, who damaged his cruciate ligament in pre-season, was scheduled to miss the majority of the Premier League season.

"The injury is well-documented so I will not dwell on it, however I can say I have had a good operation on my knee and I am definitely on the mend,” Essien told Chelsea’s official website.

"I have been here before and know the routine inside out now but it's still hard work as I hate to watch games on TV.

"I prefer to be with my teammates in training and on the field of play, however I know I have to be patient so I can heal properly."

Despite the positive strides towards full fitness, the Ghana international is unaware of when he will make a competitive return.

"I have been asked when I am coming back and at this point in time it's down to how the recovery goes and when I am given the all clear by the medical team,” he added.

"Sorry I can't be more precise, but it's too early to give specific dates."

The former Premier League champions travel to Sunderland on September 10.
