Chelsea, Manchester United set decade-long Premier League high in 4-3 thriller

Chelsea, Man United set decade-long Premier League high in 4-3 thriller

Chelsea and Manchester United have set a near-decade-long Premier League high in their exhilarating 4-3 thriller at Stamford Bridge this evening.

Mauricio Pochettino's side led 2-0 inside 20 minutes thanks to goals from Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer, but the teams went in level at the break after Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes pegged the hosts back.

Garnacho's second midway through the second half then put the Red Devils ahead in a extremely open, free-flowing encounter, before there was extraordinary injury-time drama.

Another penalty for Palmer saw Chelsea equalise in the 100th minute, before then firing home the winner on 101 minutes, setting the record for the latest-ever turnaround in Premier League history.

In one of the most open games in recent history, it is no surprise that the game has set highs not seen in almost a decade.

Chelsea and Man United set nine-year Premier League high

Tonight's encounter saw Chelsea and United amass 47 shots between them, taking the tally to 88 in the two games between the sides this season.

In United's 2-1 win over Chelsea back in early December, the two managed 41, with Erik ten Hag's side dominant, registering an xG of 4.1 from 28 shots.

That is the highest tally since Leicester City and Queen's Park Rangers managed 92 in their two games back in 2014-15.

Before this week, no fixture since QPR's 3-2 win over Leicester in 2014 had seen 47+ shots, but Chelsea have now been a part of two games that have hit that tally in the space of six days.

The Blues' 2-2 draw with Burnley saw the two sides have 51 shots between them, with tonight's clash at Stamford Bridge then seeing 47.

Chelsea set entertaining top-flight high in win over Man United

They are not the only stats high that have been set given the open nature of the 4-3 win for Chelsea, as the team has also hit a new high in that win.

For the first time in 35 years, a top-flight team has both scored and conceded two goals in six successive competitive games.

Dating back to Chelsea's 3-2 win over Leeds United in the FA Cup fifth round, each game since has seen that feat occur.

The following weekend saw Pochettino's side draw 2-2 at Brentford, before they then beat Newcastle 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.

Another FA Cup thriller earned Chelsea a place in the semi-finals of the competition thanks to a 4-2 win over Leicester City, before the two goal frenzies over the past week by the Blues.
