Gary Cahill: 'John Stones could handle Chelsea move'

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill believes that John Stones would fit in quickly at the club if he were to join from Everton.

Gary Cahill has claimed that John Stones has the right mentality to handle a move to Chelsea.

The Everton defender has been heavily linked with the Premier League champions over the past week.

Chelsea have already had a £20m bid for the 21-year-old rejected, though they are expected to come back with a £26m offer for the England international.

However, reports have suggested that they will need to pay around £30m to land Stones.

While a move for the centre-back has yet to be agreed, Cahill believes that the youngster has the composure to not let such a big transfer fee affect him.

"In terms of ambition, if you're a young player in the game, have played in the Premier League like he did a lot last year, and a big club come calling, it's very difficult to turn down because you want to achieve the most you can in the short period you have in your career as a professional footballer," he told the Evening Standard.

"When you talk about being able to handle [a big transfer fee], you look at their personality. From what I have seen when I have been away with him for England, he is a genuinely nice guy, a down-to-earth lad. There is nothing 'big-time' about him. So for me, I'm sure he will be able to cope with the fee if it happens.

"Plus, with the right support around him, like from the more experienced players in the Chelsea squad, and his family, I'm sure he'll be fine. He is a top young player. Of course he is still young and is still learning but in terms of potential, he is a fantastic player."

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has repeatedly insisted that the Toffees have no intention of selling Stones.
