Andre Villas-Boas: 'Brad Friedel could start against Chelsea'

Andre Villas-Boas refuses to say whether Brad Friedel or Hugo Lloris will start in goal for Tottenham Hotspur against Chelsea on Saturday.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has remained coy on who will start in goal for his side in their clash with Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

American goalkeeper Brad Friedel and France international Hugo Lloris will be competing for a place in the starting lineup at White Hart Lane.

"They compete for a position," he told ESPN. "In the end, we have made Brad the number one for the beginning of the season and we still see Brad as number one, a player who has been tremendous in goal for us. We respect that.

"Hugo has been tremendous for us in exactly the same manner. It is obviously a decision I have to take, which I will take [on Friday] and in the future.

"Certainly, Brad has been tremendous, we respect that, he is looking in form, as Hugo is. He has done brilliantly this week for France [in the 1-1 away draw with Spain]. So competition will continue between the two. The decision will be left before the game."

Tottenham are currently fifth in the Premier League table with 14 points from seven matches, five points behind leaders Chelsea.
