Alan Pardew says that he will 'gulp on his beer' if Chelsea win the Champions League and displace Newcastle United from a European place.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew does not expect his team to be denied a place in Europe next season by Chelsea winning the Champions League.

The Magpies are likely to face a nervous wait following the end of the domestic season if Chelsea overcome Barcelona and reach the final of Europe's premier competition.

If Roberto Di Matteo's men are crowned European champions then they will automatically qualify for next season's Champions League, regardless of their final league position.

Newcastle are currently fifth in the Premier League table, above Chelsea and level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

If his team leapfrog Spurs but Chelsea win the Champions League, Pardew would have to settle for Europa League football next season. However, the 50-year-old does not think that scenario is likely.

He said: "Do I have a problem with it if Chelsea win the Champions League, and then fourth doesn't get a qualifying spot? No, not really.

"They've got to win it first. If we finish fourth, I'd gulp on my beer if Chelsea won the Champions League. I'm sure we all would."

Newcastle have won their last five home matches and host Stoke City on Saturday.
