Jose Mourinho: 'Diego Costa was not fit enough to play'

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho admits that striker Diego Costa was not in the right condition to play in his side's Champions League clash with Schalke 04.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that striker Diego Costa was not fit enough to play in his side's Champions League clash with Schalke 04.

The 25-year-old has netted seven times in four Premier League matches for the Blues, but was rested in favour of Didier Drogba for the match at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho's side struggled in front of goal despite taking the lead through Cesc Fabregas, but they were forced to settle for a point when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar netted for the visitors.

He told Sky Sports News: "Diego Costa is not in condition to play three matches in a week. He has problems when he plays one game, he needs a week to recover and now playing matches Tuesday and Wednesday he can't do it. He was not in a condition to do more than he did."

Chelsea face Manchester City in their Premier League clash on Sunday.
