Jose Riga quits Charlton Athletic

Jose Riga announces that he has resigned as manager of relegated Charlton Athletic.

Jose Riga has quit as manager of Charlton Athletic following the club's final game of the season.

The Belgian took over at The Valley in January but was unable to prevent the club from being relegated to League One and announced his decision to quit moments after the Addicks' 3-0 defeat to champions Burnley.

"It's not necessarily about going down to League One - and I am not a liar. I have taken this decision a few days ago. Even before that it was down to what I saw and could feel," he said.

"Everybody can recognise my investment in Charlton the first time I was here and this time. It's not that I think I'm better than League One.

"You succeed in a season before the season when you have the right choices. But it's more than just about players - it's the club structure."

In a statement on their club website, Charlton said: "The club would like to thank José for all his hard work over the last few months and wish him the very best in the future. An announcement regarding a replacement will be made in due course."

Riga had been in charge at Charlton for the second time in his career, having previously been at the helm in 2014 for three months.
