Alan Whiteley: 'Craig Bellamy not bought to please unhappy fans'

Whiteley: 'Bellamy not to appease fans'

Cardiff City chief executive Alan Whiteley has refuted suggestions that Craig Bellamy was bought in order to "appease" discontented supporters.

A collection of Bluebird fans have expressed their frustrations at the Championship club after the Malaysian owners changed the club's traditional blue strip to red.

Whiteley has insisted that the purchase of Bellamy from Liverpool was a transfer solely completed to benefit the club moving forward.

"I don't think we were looking for a marquee signing or a signing to appease the fans," BBC Sport quotes Whiteley as saying.

"What we're looking to do is make sure we've got the quality to make sure the team has got the best chance of getting promotion.

"Most of the teams in the Premier League would have loved to have [Bellamy] from Liverpool, so it's not necessarily a crowd pleaser."

The Welsh forward recently stated that his decision to move back to the Cardiff City Stadium was based on family reasons.
