Dean Marney scored the only goal of the game for the visitors against his old club after 39 minutes when he fired past David Stockdale from close range.

Hull had Stockdale to thank for keeping them in the match after he made a superb early save from Ross Wallace, turning a long-range strike onto the crossbar at full stretch.

Martin Paterson and Charlie Austin also came close for the visitors, who had chances to extend their lead throughout.

Steve Bruce's side responded after the break and came close to equalising through Steven Quinn, who turned a free header over the bar after a fine passing move.

Hull dominated possession in the closing stages but Burnley held firm to take all three points.
