Vokes delighted with Europa League goal

Burnley striker Sam Vokes has revealed his delight after scoring in his side's first European tie in 51 years on Thursday.

Welsh international Vokes netted the equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Aberdeen after coming on from the bench in the Europa League second qualifying round fixture at the Pittodrie Stadium.

Speaking to The Express, the striker said that he is confident ahead of the return leg on Thursday.

"It was good we got something out of the game to repay the fans so it was a great night for them. There's been a buzz around the town since the day we qualified for Europe," Vokes said. "The lads wanted to be part of a journey in the Europa League and hopefully this is the start of a run, but it will be another tough night next Thursday and Aberdeen will have hope coming down.

"I know Aberdeen had a great season last season so we knew it would be tough. We watched some of their recent games and some from last season. It felt like a proper cup tie and it was a great atmosphere from both sets of fans.

"The atmosphere at Turf Moor will be similar to Pittodrie – the stadium gets rocking for evening games and Aberdeen will bring a few fans down so it will be a good occasion."

Burnley achieved European qualification with a seventh-place Premier League finish last season.
