Burnley boss Sean Dyche admits that his side could have taken all three points from their trip to Southampton, but is pleased with the mental strength shown at St Mary's.

Sean Dyche has praised the mental strength shown by his Burnley players to claim a point from their Premier League meeting with Southampton.

The Clarets made the trip to the south coast three days after playing out a goalless draw with Istanbul Basaksehir in the Europa League qualifying rounds.

Burnley looked far from fatigued in the first half of Sunday's clash at St Mary's Stadium, however, as they enjoyed more of the ball and created a couple of good chances.

Southampton grew into the match and in the end the sides settled for a point apiece on the opening weekend, but Dyche admits that it could have been even better for the visitors.

"It was a well deserved point that could have been all three," he told BBC Sport after the 0-0 draw.

"It's not easy to dominate away from home like we did. We were good in possession and had a good shape. They came back into it after a change of shape and we had to show a different side to our team then as we have many times before.

"You have to have a good mentality in the Premier League and we have a good balance of mentality and quality. It was a pleasing performance especially after a really tough away game on Thursday night."

Burnley made four changes to their starting lineup on the back of the draw in Turkey.
