Live Commentary: Burnley 1-0 Ipswich Town - as it happened

Burnley 1-0 Ipswich - as it happened

The lunchtime kickoff in the penultimate weekend of the Championship season saw already-promoted Burnley welcome playoff-hopefuls Ipswich Town to Turf Moor.

The Clarets had little to play for after securing promotion earlier this week, but still came out on top in their final home game of the season, ending Ipswich's hopes of reaching the top six.

Read how it all unfolded in blustery Lancashire in our minute-by-minute updates below.

2.13pmMake sure you keep it Sports Mole for the rest of the Championship and much more today. Good afternoon!

2.10pmFor Ipswich, their top-six dream is over as they are four points adrift of the playoffs with just one game - at home to Sheffield Wednesday - left. Here's the latest table.

2.08pmCongratulations to Burnley as they win 26 games for the first time in a league season. They are deservedly going up to the Premier League.

90+5 minFULL-TIME: BURNLEY 1-0 IPSWICH

90+4 minIpswich not doing anything to trouble Burnley. Berra has gone up to join the attack but hasn't helped their blunt attack.

90+1 minFour minutes of added time are signalled, with Burnley on their way to a club-record season.

89 minCHANCE! Great stuff from Taylor down the right as he shrugs off two defenders before curling over a perfect cross that Berra doesn't meet well and trickles a header wide.

88 minShot on the turn from 25 yards by Nouble that flashes high and wide.

87 minAlmost opens up for Green in the middle but he can't quite contort his body to get of a shot.

83 minCLOSE! Almost a spectacular equaliser from Nouble as the substitute dips a volley a yard or so over the top from 20 yards.

82 minBOOKING! Williams goes into the book for a late challenge on Trippier after cheaply giving the ball away.

81 minSAVE! What a fantastic stop from Heaton as he claws Taylor's free kick away from the top corner. The Ipswich sub couldn't have placed it any better.

80 minThey do now have a free kick on the edge of the box as Duff challenges Green from behind...

77 minIpswich just appear to have no idea what to do to break Burnley down. They need two goals in a little over 10 minutes but you could give them a lot longer and I'm not sure they'd break through.

73 minOFF THE BAR! Inches away from a second for Burnley as Marney races down the right before producing a perfect low cross that Ings sidefoots against the face of the crossbar.

73 minCross towards the near post by Chambers that Nouble throws a leg at but can't beat Heaton to the ball.

71 minBURNLEY SUB: Burnley have now swapped both of their wingers too as Ross Wallace replaces Arfield on the right.

69 minAll Burnley now as Ings's shot is blocked in the area. You'd think that Ipswich would be going for it given that their season is over with a loss, but it's Burnley turning the screw.

69 minCLOSE! Almost a second for Burnley as Jones's deep free kick causes havoc in the box, with Berra able to clear.

66 minIPSWICH SUBS: Richardson and Hunt are the two men replaced, so it's all-change on the wings for Town.

65 minHalf-hearted appeals for a penalty by Ipswich as Williams looks to beat Duff to the ball and appears to be struck by the defender's high foot. Not much from the Ipswich players, but that could have been given.

63 minBURNLEY SUB: First change of the match comes from the home side as goalscorer Kightly is replaced by Junior Stanislas. McCarthy will also be making a double change shortly, with Frank Nouble and Paul Taylor ready to come on.

62 minIf Ipswich are to score, a set-piece is likely to be their best bet. The latest one is fired in low by Richardson and Williams flicks it on but Smith can't react quick enough to make meaningful contact.

61 minBurnley win a 30-yard free kick and Trippier likes to hit them Cristiano-style with dip. Not a good effort this time as he shoots well over.

60 minAnd now Ings has a similar effort that he strikes better than Murphy but also hits it wide.

56 minAmbitious effort from Murphy as the ball pops up invitingly from 30 yards and he tries a dipping volley that goes well wide. As things stand, Ipswich's season is petering to an end. They have no chance of reaching the playoffs with a loss today.

54 minThe soon-to-be Premier League outfit go in front as Barnes beats Berra to the ball before slipping in Ings. He skips past the challenge of Chambers before his shot is saved by Gerken and falls kindly to Kightly to tap home. Ings should have laid it off to his teammate in the first place.

54 minGOAL! BURNLEY 1-0 IPSWICH (KIGHTLY)

51 minGreat dribbling from Williams as he streaks down the right. He holds off the attention of two Burnley defenders but it doesn't lead to anything.

49 minEnd-to-end start to the second half, with both sides looking fairly menacing on the counter-attack but unable to carve out an opening.

46 minKICKOFF! We're back underway at Turf Moor, with neither Dyche or McCarthy making any changes at the break.

1.14pmLooking at the first-half stats, they reflect the evenness of the game. Possession is 50-50 and shots (on target) are 5(1) and 6(1). Ipswich came closest when Smith's close-range header was cleared off the line by Trippier.

1.11pm

1.08pmIf you're only just joining us and want a quick recap on the opening half, check out our HT report here.

1.04pmNot much of note in that first half. Burnley started really well but were unable to make their early dominance pay. After the 20-minute mark Ipswich looked the more dangerous but couldn't really create much.

45+2 minHALF-TIME: BURNLEY 0-0 IPSWICH

45+1 minThere's barely been a stoppage this half so there'll be just one added minute. McCarthy will certainly be the happier of the two managers.

42 minCLOSE! Sloppy defending from Ipswich allows Ings into the area and he earns a yard of space with a pair of step-overs before trying to catch Gerken out at the near post but is only able to hit the side-netting.

41 minCHANCE! Decent again from the visitors as Williams slips in Murphy down the left. The frontman crosses to the back post where Richardson can only stab over on the stretch.

39 minProbably Ipswich's best move of the match as it's worked to Chambers on the right. He crosses low and Shackell mishits his clearance before Duff hacks it out for a corner.

37 minTerrible backpass from Kightly as he pings it back to Heaton. The Burnley keeper has to control it with his chest and almost allows Hunt in to nick it.

34 minSHOT! Good hold-up play from Barnes as he retains possession before shooting low from 25 yards and testing Gerken. It's the first shot either keeper has really had to deal with.

31 minIpswich fail to create anything from a couple of corners and Burnley break from the second one through Kightly. His cross from the right is a good one for Arfield, but he can't get a good head on it.

27 minOFF THE LINE! So close to an opener for Ipswich as Richardson's deep free kick from the right is headed back across goal by Berra, with Smith nodding at goal and denied by Trippier on the line.

25 minBOOKING! Smith goes into the book for cynically taking out Ings after a loose pass from Cresswell.

23 minWilliams gets in behind the backline and bursts into the area but he's flagged offside. The young Welshman is starting to have more of an influence on the game in the free role that he has in Ipswich's attack.

20 minJust as I say that, Trippier plays a long ball over the top, with Barnes staying just onside. He brings the ball down but doesn't have time to get off a shot as Smith comes across to clear.

20 minHunt so close to stealing the ball away from Heaton as the Burnley keeper waited for it to come into the area so he could pick it up. Game's gone a little flat.

17 minFantastic volleyed pass by Skuse into Richardson down the right. The cross is poor from the defender playing in midfield and there wasn't anyone in the area anyway.

14 minHunt manages to get past two Burnley defenders before Green takes it on and weakly shoots at goal. Neither keeper yet to be properly tested, with Burnley two early blocked shots the closest we've come to a goal.

13 minApplause rings around the stadium as tribute is paid to local lad Robbie Williamson, who lost his life aged just 11.

11 minGood burst forward from Trippier and he then clips the ball over to Ings, whose headed knockdown towards Barnes is just too strong and Ipswich keeper Gerken collects.

9 minSHOT! First Ipswich effort of the game as Williams and Murphy link up well. The latter squeezes off a low shot that's heading for the far corner but doesn't reach it because of Mee's block.

7 minIpswich have settled down after that fast start by Burnley. Plenty of football being played in the middle of the park at the moment.

5 minFirst foul of the game by Marney as he slides in late on Crystal Palace loanee Williams, who has been a revelation with the Tractor Boys.

4 minLooks like the sun was only out for kickoff. The wind has really picked up now.

3 minNext to have a go is Ings, who strikes quickly after a lay-off from Barnes but is also denied by a good block by Smith.

1 minCHANCE! Great start from Burnley as Trippier clips the ball into Ings, who cleverly lays it off for Arfield. He looks to score against Ipswich again but has his volley well blocked.

0 minKICKOFF! The Clarets get us underway at sunny Turf Moor.

12.14pmPREDICTION! Kickoff moments away so I best make my pre-game prediction. I fancy an entertaining affair and 2-2 draw.

12.13pmJust ahead of kickoff, the two managers have been speaking to Sky Sports. McCarthy describes Burnley's season as "outstanding" but admits that he is hoping the Clarets lose their concentration a bit.

Dyche mentions that comment and seems a little irked by it, insisting that he has "demanded" a proper performance from his players. Surely what he'll get on their last home game of the season.

12.11pmLAST TIME OUT! When these two sides last met back in October, Burnley took the points thanks to Scott Arfield's goal.

12.09pmClick here to see how the table looks going into today's games. As you can see, Ipswich are now down in ninth and four points shy of Brighton & Hove Albion in sixth after the Seagulls' victory over rockbottom Yeovil Town last night. That win for Oscar Garcia's side means that defeat today would confirm that Ipswich can't make the playoffs. Realistically, they have to win.

12.06pmThat brings us nicely to McCarthy, who has done a superb job with the Tractor Boys. When he took over at the end of 2012, Ipswich were in the thick of a relegation scrap but he led them to mid-table safety before building on those foundations and contending for the playoffs this season.

12.03pmA big part of Burnley's success has been the mean strike duo of Danny Ings and Sam Vokes. Vokes is out with a long-term injury and has just told Sky Sports that it will still be a while until he is fully fit. Doesn't sound like he'll be ready for the start of the Premier League season. He also recalls when he last got promoted with Wolves and today's opposition manager Mick McCarthy!

12.01pmToday's game really is a celebration of Burnley's phenomenal season. The Clarets fully deserve to go up after the job that Sean Dyche has done with a small squad that was fancied for relegation at the start of the season!

11.58amREFEREE WATCH! The man in charge today is James Linington, who on Monday was at Loftus Road to oversee Queens Park Rangers's victory over Watford.

11.55amMick McCarthy, meanwhile, makes two changes for Ipswich as Christophe Berra returns from injury and Paul Green replaces the injured Paul Anderson. Berra comes in for midfielder Anthony Wordsworth, also injured, so Frazer Richardson moves up into midfield.

11.50amIPSWICH SUBS: Loach, Mings, Veseli, Tabb, Taylor, Marriott, Nouble

11.49amIPSWICH XI: Gerken; Chambers, Berra, Smith, Cresswell; Richardson, Green, Skuse; Williams, Hunt; Murphy

11.48amBURNLEY SUBS: Cisak, Edgar, Wallace, Treacy, Baird, Stanislas, Long

11.48amBURNLEY XI: Heaton; Tripper, Shackell, Duff, Mee; Arfield, Marney, Jones, Kightly; Barnes, Ings

11.46amMorning folks! The first of 11 Championship games today takes place in Lancashire as Burnley welcome Ipswich Town. Team news coming right up...
