Preview: Bosnia-Herzegovina vs. Poland - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's UEFA Nations League clash between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Poland, including team news and predicted lineups.

Bosnia-Herzegovina will be looking to build on their impressive result against Italy on Friday night when they continue their UEFA Nations League campaign at home to Poland on Monday.

Dusan Bajevic's side picked up a 1-1 draw against the Italians in their competition opener, while Poland suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands to sit bottom of League A Group 1.

Bosnia have a tough task when it comes to making a serious impression in this group, and head coach Bajevic recently said that the team's main task was to "stay in League A".

The Dragons might now be eyeing a spot further up the section, though, having picked up an impressive result away to Italy in their competition opener on Friday night.

Edin Dzeko sent Bosnia into a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute of the contest before Stefano Sensi levelled 10 minutes later as the points were shared in a 1-1 draw.

Bajevic's side will be looking for another positive result ahead of their next two games in the competition at home to the Netherlands and away to Poland in October.

More importantly, though, the national side are bidding to qualify for next summer's European Championships and will take on Northern Ireland in the semi-finals of the playoffs next month ahead of a potential final against Slovakia or the Republic of Ireland in November.

Poland, meanwhile, suffered a defeat in their 2020-21 UEFA Nations League opener on Friday night, losing 1-0 to the Netherlands in Amsterdam courtesy of a strike from Steven Bergwijn.

Without star forward and captain Robert Lewandowski, the visitors found it difficult to make their mark, meaning that there is huge pressure on them to pick up a positive result in their second game in the section.

Poland, though, have also already qualified for next summer's European Championships, winning eight of their 10 Group G matches to finish top of the section.

Jerzy Brzeczek's side are yet to win a UEFA Nations League game, though, losing three and drawing two of their five previous matches, with four of those encounters taking place in the 2018-19 edition.

Team News

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski celebrates winning the Champions League on August 23, 2020© Reuters

Roma forward Dzeko will again lead the line for Bosnia, and the 34-year-old will be full of confidence, having scored his 59th international goal against Italy on Friday night.

Edin Visca is the second leading goalscorer in the squad with 10 goals and should keep his spot in attack, while Armin Hodzic and Amer Gojak are also likely to retain their positions in the final third.

Arsenal's Sead Kolasinac was in the starting XI against Italy last time out, but Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic and Bournemouth's Asmir Begovic were both on the bench.

As for Poland, the main talking point is again the absence of Bayern Munich's Lewandowski as the centre-forward has been given an extended rest following the Champions League final.

Lewandowski scored 55 times in 47 appearances for his treble-winning club last term, while he has netted 61 goals in 112 outings for his national side, which is an indication of his importance.

Krzysztof Piatek started through the middle against the Netherlands and that is again expected to be case here, with Piotr Zielinski and Sebastian Szymanski providing support from attacking areas.

Leeds United's Mateusz Klich could retain his spot in midfield, while Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and Southampton's Jan Bednarek will feature in the starting XI.

Bosnia-Herzegovina possible starting lineup:
Sehic; Cipetic, Sunjic, Sanicanin, Kolasinac; Cimirot, Hadziahmetovic; Visca, Gojak, Hodzic; Dzeko

Poland possible starting lineup:
Szczesny; Kedziora, Glik, Bednarek, Bereszynski; Szymanski, Klich, Krychowiak, Jozwiak; Zielinski; Piatek

We say: Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-1 Poland

Poland will be determined to get off the mark in terms of points in this group, and we fancy the visitors to pick up a share of the spoils on Monday night despite the fact that Bosnia will be full of confidence.
