"As a centre-back, James has all the attributes we look for – a strong 1v1 defender, aerially dominant and comfortable in possession," said director of football Gregg Broughton.

"We have worked hard to secure James' services ahead of many other Championship clubs and as a Lancastrian, we know he will find the transition to Blackburn Rovers straightforward.

"He has already played over 70 senior games, represented England at Under-21 level and most recently made his Premier League debut for AFC Bournemouth earlier this month.

"We are really pleased that Bournemouth recognise that our brand of football and training environment were the perfect fit for James to play his football this season."
