Istanbul derby abandoned due to rioting

Tonight's Istanbul derby clash between Besiktas and Galatasaray has been abandoned after fans stormed the pitch at the Olympic Stadium.

The visitors were leading 2-1 in the third minute of injury time when Felipe Melo saw red, and things then took a turn for the worse.

Police used tear gas to restrain the pitch invaders, who are believed to be part of a group called 'Carsi' - which is Besiktas' political fan base.

The rioting was believed to have been staged in opposition to government plans to demolish the city park at the central square of Taksim.

According to CNN Turk, the protesters chanted: "Everywhere is Taksim, everywhere is resistance."

Galatasaray are expected to be awarded the win following an investigation by the Turkish Football Federation.
