Bayern Munich thrash poor Stuttgart

Bayern Munich score four times in the first half to beat Stuttgart 4-0.

A rampant first-half display has seen Bayern Munich see off Stuttgart 4-0 at Allianz Arena to temporarily extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to eight points.

Bayern failed to win for the first time in the league this season with a 0-0 draw againt Eintracht Frankfurt last Friday but after thrashing Arsenal 5-1 on Wednesday they started on top, with Arturo Vidal seeing a long-range effort saved by Przemyslaw Tyton.

Arjen Robben was brought back into the starting XI after coming on to score instantly against Arsenal in midweek, and he took just 11 minutes to find the net as a lightning break from the hosts ended with fine work from Douglas Costa to find the Dutchman to chest home the opener.

Bayern doubled their lead seven minutes later when Costa capped another fine counter-attack himself by driving home from 18 yards, and Robben's fierce drive was parried away by Tyton after the winger had cut inside as they looked to add a third.

The champions were utterly dominant and Robert Lewandowski was somehow denied from point blank range by Tyton as they came forward with attempt after attempt, but Filip Kostic fired them a warning shot when he hit the bar after a mistake from David Alaba.

There was no reprieve for Stuttgart, however, as fine interplay from Thomas Muller and Robben set up Lewandowski for a simple tap-in from close range eight minutes before the break.

Pep Guardiola's side had scored four goals or more in each of their last five home matches, and they ensured that that record continued when Muller stooped to head in a fourth as the half drew to a close.

Vidal had time to head against the crossbar before the whistle as a rampant Bayern had to settle for four goals from their 23 efforts on goal in the first 45 minutes.

With the game won, Bayern understandably dropped the pace slightly in the second period but even so, Robben came close to making it five when his chipped effort fell narrowly wide of the post.

Joshua Kimmich's drive was beaten away by Tyton as the hosts remained on cruise control in the second half to see out the win and make it 12 games unbeaten to start the Bundesliga season.
