A late goal from David Luiz gives Chelsea a 2-1 win over Basel in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final in Switzerland.

A late goal from David Luiz has given Chelsea a 2-1 win over Basel in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final in Switzerland.

The Brazilian scored with a free kick deep into injury time to give the Blues the advantage going into next week's second leg at Stamford Bridge.

The visitors were ahead at the break when Victor Moses got the final touch to Branislav Ivanovic's header from a corner on 12 minutes.

Basel nearly got themselves level on the night with four minutes gone in the second half, but Valentin Stocker's low drive came back off the post with Petr Cech beaten.

It was Chelsea's turn to be denied by the woodwork soon after as Fernando Torres controlled Eden Hazard's cross before smashing his effort against the post.

A good night for the away side was dealt a blow on 71 minutes when Ashley Cole picked up a yellow card for taking too long over a free kick, meaning that he will be suspended for the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Basel were lucky to have 11 men still on the pitch moments later as Aleksandar Dragovic only received a booking for his dangerous lunge on Torres.

The hosts equalised from the penalty spot with one minute of normal time remaining through Fabian Schar after Cesar Azpilicueta had brought down Stocker.

However, Chelsea snatched a winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time when David Luiz's free kick squirmed past Sommer in the Basel goal.
