Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta has branded criticism of his Spain teammate Michu as "totally misguided and without foundation".
The Swansea City forward made his international debut against Belarus on Friday, but was withdrawn in the second period after struggling to make an impact.
"The criticism of Michu is totally misguided and without foundation," Iniesta told reporters at a press conference.
"He should be congratulated for debuting with the national team because it is not easy to reach this team and his work has been very good, so that is why he is here."
Spain need just a point from Tuesday's clash with Georgia to be certain of a spot at next summer's World Cup.
