Following in his father's footsteps: Barca announce new contract for teenage star

Barcelona have revealed that teenage forward Shane Kluivert has signed a new contract with the Catalan outfit until the summer of 2028.

The 18-year-old, who is the son of former Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert, has scored three times in seven appearances in the UEFA Youth League this season.

The youngster has also managed two goals and two assists in 16 appearances for Barcelona's second team in the Segunda Federacion during the current season.

Kluivert will now be hoping to finish the season strongly with a view to potentially being involved in the team's preparations for the 2026-27 campaign.

“Barcelona has reached an agreement with player Shane Kluivert to renew his contract, which will keep him at the club for the next two seasons, until June 30, 2028," read a statement from the Catalan giants.

The forward also posted on Instagram following the announcement.

"Proud moment for my family and I, can’t wait to show myself even more and defend these colors for two more years. Thank you to my people and Barcelona for making this renewal possible," said the teenager on his personal social media account.

Patrick Kluivert represented Barcelona between 1998 and 2004, scoring 122 goals in 257 appearances for the Catalan outfit in all competitions.

The 49-year-old managed 90 goals in 182 La Liga appearances, helping the Catalan outfit to win the championship in 1998-99.

When could Kluivert make his first-team debut for Barcelona?

Kluivert is not in Barcelona's plans at first-team level this season, but there is a chance that he could be involved in the preparations for the 2026-27 campaign.

Indeed, it will not be a regular pre-season due to the 2026 World Cup, opening the door for a number of the club's youngsters to have an impact at first-team level.

Kluivert can play as a centre-forward, but he primarily features as a left-sided attacker.

That said, two of his goals in the UEFA Youth League this season came after starting down the right, with that brace coming against Eintracht Frankfurt back in December.
