Messi equals Champions League goalscoring record in PSG defeat

Barcelona's Lionel Messi equalled a 10-year-old Champions League goalscoring record following his opener in Tuesday's 4-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in their last-16 first leg.

Ronald Koeman's side made a bright start to the game and were awarded a penalty when Layvin Kurzawa tripped Frenkie de Jong, with Messi smashing home the resulting spot kick.

The joy was short-lived, however, as Kylian Mbappe bagged a hat-trick and Moise Kean also found the back of the net in an eventual 4-1 win for the French champions, who are overwhelmingly the favourites to advance to the quarter-finals now.

Nevertheless, Messi equalled yet another record on the night as he scored in the Champions League for the 17th calendar year in a row - first doing so in 2005.

The only other player in history to embark on as long a goalscoring run was Raul, who found the back of the net at least once in every Champions League campaign between 1995 and 2011 for Real Madrid and Schalke.

Messi also equalled Xavi's La Liga appearance record for Barcelona in the weekend's 5-1 triumph over Alaves, and his penalty on Tuesday took him up to 20 goals for the season across all competitions - the 13th campaign in a row he has reached that tally.
