A stunning strike from David Villa is all that separates Atletico Madrid and Barcelona after the first 45 minutes of the two-legged Spanish Super Cup tie at the Vicente Calderon.

On his home debut and against his former team, the 31-year-old unleashed an unstoppable half-volley that had Victor Valdes grasping at air.

The Catalan side had done all the early running but they have struggled to break down a disciplined Atleti defence.

Their best opportunity fell to Alexis Sanchez in the 28th minute, but the Chilean could not quite reach Dani Alves's dangerous cross. However, as the first half drew to a close, it was the hosts who were well on top.
