Half-Time Report: Antoine Griezmann hands advantage to Atletico Madrid

Griezmann hands Atletico control

Atletico Madrid have made a positive start to the new La Liga season by taking a 1-0 lead into the interval of their meeting with newly-promoted Las Palmas at the Vicente Calderon.

Las Palmas, who are back in La Liga for the first time since 2002, looked comfortable in the early stages with neither team earning much space in attacking areas.

However, the deadlock was broken by Diego Simeone's side in the 17th minute as Antoine Griezmann benefited from some luck to see his deflected free kick leave Las Palmas goalkeeper Raul powerless.

Atletico settled down quickly after taking the lead, but they were almost caught out at the other end when Javi Castellano fired a speculative effort just over.

Jackson Martinez, making his debut for Atletico, was quiet for much of the first half until his presence in the box eventually created a chance for Filipe Luis, whose deflected effort drifted just wide of the post.
