Juanfran penalty sends Atletico Madrid through

Juanfran keeps his cool in sudden-death penalties to send Atletico Madrid into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

A sudden-death penalty from Juanfran has sent Atletico Madrid through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League at the expense of PSV Eindhoven this evening.

The two sides played out 90 minutes without a goal during the first leg in Eindhoven last month and a further 120 goalless minutes in the Spanish capital tonight, meaning that a penalty shootout was required to determine who progressed to the last eight of the tournament.

Following seven successful penalties apiece, PSV substitute Luciano Narsingh rattled the crossbar and veteran Atletico defender Juanfran stepped up to send the Vicente Calderon wild in celebration.

It was a lacklustre opening 45 minutes in what were atmospheric surroundings, during which neither goalkeeper was particularly overworked.

The only major opening of note was carved out by the hosts in the 15th minute as Koke cut the ball back inside for an unmarked Antoine Griezmann. However, despite his recent good form in front of goal, the Frenchman shot straight at Jeroen Zoet.

However, while chances were at a premium throughout the first half, both sides threw more caution to the wind after the restart in a bid to win the tie.

First Atletico defender Jose Gimenez headed wide at the back post, before in the 58th minute PSV were denied by a combination of goalkeeper, the woodwork and a defender.

Jurgen Locadia's bouncing effort from the left-hand side of the box was turned against the upright by Jan Oblak and when the rebound fell Luuk de Jong's way, his header from point-blank range was cleared off the line by retreating left-back Filipe Luis.

Ex-Chelsea defender Luis was then involved up the other end just four minutes later when he cut inside on his weaker right foot and unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box. Zoet could only punch the ball straight up into the air, but he escaped embarrassment as Yannick Ferreira Carrasco volleyed wildly over.

Yet, while there was much more adventure from the two teams, that all important goal eluded them and so the tie entered into an extra 30 minutes of play.

It was a period dominated by Atletico as substitute Lucas Hernandez headed over from six yards out, with Griezmann then shooting straight at Zoet for a second time after good work from Saul Niguez towards the right byline.

Nevertheless, spot kicks had felt inevitable for some time and there was nothing to split the two teams there for a while until Narsingh fluffed his lines and Juanfran kept his cool.
