Aston Villa forward Scott Hogan given first Republic of Ireland call-up

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill hands a first international call-up to Aston Villa forward Scott Hogan after he received clearance to play for the Green Army.

Aston Villa forward Scott Hogan has been handed his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad.

Hogan was born in Salford, but the 25-year-old qualifies to represent the Green Army through having two Irish grandparents.

The frontman has endured a disappointing start to his career at Villa, netting just one goal in 21 Championship appearances, but boss Martin O'Neill has opted to look at Hogan at the earliest opportunity.

O'Neill is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "Scott has got the paperwork through and he is available to us".

Hogan comes into contention for his debut, with Burnley forward Jonathan Walters missing from the 32-man squad through injury.

Ireland face fixtures against Moldova and Wales as they look to claim second place in their World Cup qualifying group.
