Gabriel Agbonlahor hopes for World Cup place

Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor says that he has not given up hope of earning a place in the England squad for the 2014 World Cup.

Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has revealed that he is targeting a place in England's World Cup squad.

The 27-year-old has won three international caps, but has not played for England since a 3-0 win over Belarus in October 2009.

However, Agbonlahor has insisted that he is determined to perform well for his club, to force his way into the plans of manager Roy Hodgson.

"I've always been desperate to play for England. World Cups, European Championships, qualifying matches - even a friendly - it doesn't matter to me," Agbonlahor told The Sun.

"It's always an honour to play for your country. Every time you pull on an England shirt is an honour as far as I'm concerned.

"There must be reasons why I haven't been in the squad as much as I feel I should, but that's down to me, no one else. It's my job to have a really good season and show what I can do."

Agbonlahor has scored once in seven appearances for Villa this season.
