Aston Villa transfer news: 'Agreement reached' to sign former Manchester United star

Aston Villa 'reach agreement' to sign 284-game former Manchester United player

Aston Villa have reportedly moved to the brink of signing former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof.

The Sweden international has been available on a free transfer after his eight-year stint at Old Trafford came to an end in June.

Lindelof has recently been heavily linked with a move to Serie A club Fiorentina, where he would have linked up with fellow former Man United star David De Gea.

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Everton have also been attempting to negotiate a deal with the 31-year-old.

However, Romano says that Villa are now closing in on Lindelof having offered a more lucrative proposal to the player in recent days.

Villa to sign Lindelof

Lindelof is now ready to undergo a medical ahead of penning a two-year contract with the West Midlands outfit, with the option of a further 12 months.

Although Lindelof will not be available for Sunday's Premier League encounter against Crystal Palace, it is plausible that he could be unveiled to the crowd at Villa Park either before the game or during half time.

Should Villa, as expected, get a deal over the line, it would represent their highest-profile addition of the summer transfer window given their well-documented issues with the Premier League's and UEFA's financial regulations.

As it stands, only goalkeeper Marco Bizot and versatile attacker Evann Guessand have been signed to strengthen the senior ranks from Brest and Nice respectively.

Did Villa need another defender?

Supporters will argue that adding creative midfielders and another centre-forward should take priority with Unai Emery.

That said, Villa currently only have Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres as their recognised experienced centre-backs.

The versatile Lamare Bogarde is capable of deputising when required, but Lindelof's experience and ability to play at right-back could prove to be pivotal during what Villa hope will be a prolonged campaign involving Europa League football.

Lindelof made a total of 284 appearances for United, 25 of which came during the most recent campaign.

Despite having 71 caps for Sweden, Lindelof has been left out of the Sweden squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, leaving him to spend time at Villa's training ground to integrate into the squad.
