James Rodriguez: 'We can challenge for title'

James Rodriguez insists that he moved to Monaco to win trophies and feels that they can do that this term by challenging Paris Saint-Germain for the Ligue 1 title.

James Rodriguez has insisted that he joined Monaco to win trophies and believes that they can achieve that by competing with Paris Saint-Germain for the Ligue 1 title this season.

The Colombian winger was one of several expensive arrivals at Stade Louis II in the summer, with Monaco splashing the cash to try to challenge their big-spending rivals for honours.

Rodriguez has stressed that his decision to sign for the French club from Porto at the end of last season was not financially motivated, but with a view to collecting silverware.

"I don't know if other teams from other countries were interested in me," he told Goal.com. "The only thing that I know is that Monaco was and that made me interested. That's the reason why I am here.

"I had a good season at Porto and that helped. I always want to play well, in each game, and I want my team to win. Monaco is going towards that. This project has great interest and I like that because I came to Monaco to win titles.

"I have played with great players that are very important and now I am in the same team with them. I know that we have very good players and a good team that could win the league. PSG is strong and the rest of the teams are also good. But we are going to compete with them until the last game."

Rodriguez scored on Friday as Monaco lost 2-1 to Valenciennes and missed out on the chance to climb above PSG at the top of the table.
