Arsene Wenger hopes to persuade Robin van Persie to stay at Arsenal by buying big this summer.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is targeting more summer signings as he looks to build a team capable of competing for honours.

The Frenchman has hinted that Ajax's Jan Vertonghen is next on his transfer list but said that he is also looking to the returns of Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby.

Wenger, who has also been linked with a big-money move for French starlet Yann M'Vila, hopes that more quality signings will persuade Robin van Persie to stay at the Emirates Stadium.

"Great players like to be with great players, so it helps always to get them in," said Wenger. "We have bought Podolski. Vertonghen is a defender. He is an interesting player but he is a centre-back.

"We look at all the players all over Europe every week. Our next step is to bring Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby back, and then, if you look at our squad, I don't feel we are behind anybody else."

Arsenal have already bought Lukas Podolski from Cologne for a reported £10.9m.
