Report: Wanyama is Arsenal's top target

Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama is reportedly top of Arsene Wenger's wishlist for when the transfer window reopens next month.

The Gunners are in need of cover in defensive midfield following injuries to Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin and, according to The Mirror, will contact the Saints in January with a £15m offer for the Kenyan.

The news is likely to anger Arsenal's London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who have been in pursuit of Wanyama for some time and are thought to be preparing a swap offer with Andros Townsend.

Should their bid for Wanyama be unsuccessful, Arsenal are working on a backup deal involving Paris Saint-Germain's Adrien Rabiot, who would be available for a cheaper £10m fee.

Speaking at the weekend, Wenger conceded that he was "short" in some areas and suggested that he would dip into the market to rectify the problem.
