Real Madrid are reportedly contemplating whether to make an approach for a key Arsenal defender during the summer transfer window.

Real Madrid have reportedly identified a key Arsenal defender as a potential summer transfer target.

Los Blancos currently find themselves as underdogs to retain the La Liga title now they sit in second place in the standings having played a game more than leaders Barcelona.

However, during a campaign where they have struggled for players at right-back and in the middle of their defence through injury, there is an argument that it has been an admirable effort from Carlo Ancelotti's men.

Nevertheless, it has emphasised that fresh faces for the backline will arrive ahead of 2025-26, particularly at a time when the average age needs to be reduced.

Reports persisted earlier in the year that Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold could be signed to resolve the right-back issues, yet it appears that another Premier League defender is on the club's radar.

Calafiori emerges as Real Madrid target?

According to Fichajes, Real Madrid officials are contemplating whether to make a bid for Riccardo Calafiori.

Although hindered by injury during the early part of his Gunners career, the 22-year-old has since shown why Mikel Arteta gave the green light to pay €45m (£37.8m) for his signature.

A total of 16 starts and 10 substitute outings have been made in all competitions, Calafiori either being used at left-back or centre-back.

With Arsenal possessing the best defensive record in the Premier League and having reached the Champions League quarter-finals, the Italy international has significantly strengthened the Arsenal defence.

As such, the report alleges that Real may make their move, albeit in the knowledge that their Arsenal counterparts would insist on in excess of €80m (£67.3m)

At a time when the Spanish outfit have also been linked with William Saliba, it appears increasingly likely that Arsenal may have to fend off interest from Real Madrid over the coming months.

What will Arteta's stance be?

Much has been made of the defensive qualities of this Arsenal squad and Mikel Arteta will not want to see any of his trusted players leave the Emirates Stadium.

On the flip side, interest in their star men is to be expected when they have conceded just 24 goals in 29 Premier League games this campaign.

There is a scenario where a balance may need to be found to resolve issues in other areas of the pitch, particularly down the middle of the attack when a new centre-forward is desired.

That said, Arteta may not want to compromise on what he has at his disposal in defence, despite Myles Lewis-Skelly having recently gotten the nod at left-back ahead of Calafiori.
