Chelsea reportedly initiate contacts over a potential deal to sign AC Milan attacker Rafael Leao, who is also attracting interest from Arsenal.

Chelsea have reportedly opened talks over a potential move to sign AC Milan attacker Rafael Leao.

The Portuguese winger has made 270 appearances since joining Milan from Lille in the summer of 2019, racking up 70 goals and 62 assists.

Leao has continued to be a key player in the Milan side this season, scoring 12 goals and providing 13 assists in 48 matches in all competitions.

However, there appears to be considerable doubt as to whether he will still be at the club beyond the end of the upcoming transfer window.

Last month, it was reported that Arsenal have identified the Portugal international as one of their top transfer targets.

Chelsea open Leao talks

However, it appears that Arsenal will face competition from one of their London rivals in the race to sign the Milan star.

According to Caught Offside, Chelsea have 'initiated informal contacts' over a potential deal to sign Leao ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

The report claims that Chelsea's interest is more advanced than any other club, having opened talks over a possible transfer.

Leao has a contract with Milan until the summer of 2028, with the deal believed to contain a whopping €175m (£148m) release clause.

However, there is a belief that the Rossoneri could allow Leao to depart if they receive offers in the region of €75m (£63.4m).

Do Chelsea need to sign Leao?

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca can call upon a number of wide options, including Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke, Jadon Sancho and Tyrique George.

The Blues could still look to recruit a new winger this summer, especially if they decide to pay the penalty fee to avoid purchasing Manchester United loanee Sancho on a permanent deal.

Leao would be a high-quality option to operate on Chelsea's left flank, and the player of his calibre could be particularly valuable if the Blues secure Champions League qualification.

While Leao could improve Chelsea's squad, the West London club will have to be wary about rival interest from Arsenal and the Saudi Pro League.
