Arsenal transfer news today: What's happening on August 23?

In the hours after Friday's statement success, the transfer storyline that has consumed the weekend so far is Julian Alvarez, whose personal refusal to join the club represents the decisive blow in a long pursuit.

Atletico Madrid are reported to have agreed in principle to let Alvarez leave for Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta understood to have spoken directly with the Argentina striker about the move, only for Alvarez himself to decline the opportunity and indicate he wishes to remain in Spain - potentially with Barcelona.

With Alvarez no longer a realistic target, Arsenal have turned their attention to Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray as a potential alternative to provide competition and cover for Viktor Gyokeres.

Osimhen has scored 63 goals in 76 appearances since joining the Turkish side permanently from Napoli, but Arsenal have made their position clear: they will not break their wage structure to sign the Nigeria international and would expect him to take a meaningful reduction on his current terms to make the deal happen.

Juventus hotshot Kenan Yildiz has been identified as a primary alternative to Alvarez or Osimhen, but Bianconeri boss Luciano Spalletti has publicly stated that the Turkey international will be going nowhere, seemingly ruling out an ambitious Arsenal swoop in the coming days.

Should a deal for either one of the three forward players be engineered, Gabriel Jesus could be the player who departs to create space, with Everton and Ipswich Town having already made contact with Arsenal about his availability.
