Arsenal legend Ian Wright has backed Gunners midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan to thrive in the "friendlier atmosphere" at his new club.

Wright highlighted the Armenian's experiences at former club Manchester United, at which he was pushed out of the first team by Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho.

The 54-year-old told Sky Sports News, however, that he hopes that Mkhitaryan will settle better under Arsene Wenger and his new teammates.

"Mkhitaryan is a top player," Wright said. "Unfortunately we haven't seen the best of him at Manchester United. He is still trying to find his feet here.

"We know that Mourinho can get the hump with some players and it isn't a bad thing if he blows you out - we've seen it with [Kevin] De Bruyne and [Mohamed] Salah - but you are hoping he can come to Arsenal, a much friendlier environment, in terms of the manager, and hopefully he can thrive in that.

"I have seen enough of him when he has played that he definitely has quality. The big risk is him getting back to the form [he showed] at [Borussia] Dortmund."

Mkhitaryan joined Arsenal in a swap deal with United on Monday, under which Alexis Sanchez moved to Old Trafford.
