Pires ponders future

Former Arsenal winger Robert Pires has said that he is debating whether to retire from football or make a return to action in January.

Pires, 38, has been without a club since being released from Aston Villa, where he made nine appearances, in the summer.

The Frenchman has been offered to join Ligue 1 side Valenciennes in January but is unsure whether he wants to make the move.

"I'm on stand-by. I want to go but I'm also keen to retire," Pires said.

Pires, who had a four-year spell at Villarreal after leaving Arsenal, made 189 appearances under Arsene Wenger, scoring 62 goals.
