Arsenal could match a club winning record last achieved by the Invincibles when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers in Sunday's Premier League finale.

Mikel Arteta's men have nothing but pride on the line for their final-day affair, having seen their title dreams officially come to an end in a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest last week.

A first-half Taiwo Awoniyi strike assured Manchester City of a third successive title, while confirming that Arsenal would end the season in second place after leading the league for 248 days.

The Gunners have therefore set an unwanted record for the most days at the top without going on to win the Premier League title, but Arteta will be leading the North London club into the Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign next year.

A recent drop-off in form has contributed to Arsenal's downfall, with Arteta's men winning just two of their last eight Premier League games and losing back-to-back fixtures without scoring.

However, those recent successes over Newcastle United and Chelsea moved the Gunners onto 25 wins for the season, and they could now match their all-time record of 26 Premier League victories in a single campaign.

Only two previous Arsenal teams have achieved that number of wins during a Premier League season, firstly the 2001-02 title-winning team, who collected 87 points with 26 wins, nine draws and three defeats.

Two years later, Arsene Wenger led the Invincibles to 26 wins and 12 draws from their 38 matches, amassing 90 points in the process en route to their third and most recent Premier League crown.

With 25 wins, six draws and six defeats to their name so far this season, Arsenal sit on 81 points ahead of the visit of Wolves, and a win would see them earn their highest points tally since the 2003-04 team.

Since collecting 90 points 19 years ago, Arsenal have finished on 83 points in the 2004-05 and 2007-08 seasons, finishing second and third respectively in those campaigns, while they only posted 69 in the 2021-22 campaign.

The Gunners ended last season with a 5-1 thrashing of Everton, which marked their 11th consecutive final-day success, and not since 1993 have Arsenal lost a gameweek 38 fixture at home.

However, Arteta revealed fresh injury concerns over both Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard ahead of Sunday's game, with the pair emerging as doubts for the contest due to knocks.

Should Saka be passed fit for the match, though, he could be one of four Arsenal players to feature in all 38 Premier League games this season alongside Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Such an occurrence would be the first time in the Premier League era that Arsenal have had at least four players play every game in a season, with David Seaman, Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn and Steve Bould last doing so for the Gunners in the 1990-91 campaign, during which the North London club won the First Division title.

Gabriel Martinelli (ankle), William Saliba (back), Oleksandr Zinchenko (calf), Takehiro Tomiyasu and Mohamed Elneny (both knee) are also set to sit out the final day of the season, while Reiss Nelson will need assessing after missing last week's loss to Forest through illness.
